This is the first song I finished for this project, the rest followed pretty much on its own. I usually start out with poetry as dummy lyrics, but with this song what I stumbled upon (some lines by Blake and some by Housman) worked so well I had to keep it, therefore the metatextual chorus.
lyrics
Thoughts in a Bag
Never seek to tell thy love
Love that never told can be
For the gentle wind does move
Silently, invisibly
I told my love my love
I told her all my heart
Trembling, cold, in ghastly fears
She did depart
How have you left the ancient love
That bards of old enjoyed in you!
The languid strings do scarcely move
The sound is forced the notes are few!
Soon as she was gone
A traveller came by
Silently, invisibly
He took her with a sigh
When I was twenty-one
I heard a wise man say
Give crowns and pounds and guineas
But not your heart away
Give pearls away and rubies
But keep your fancy free
But I was twenty-one
No use to talk to me
When I was twenty-three
I heard him say again
The heart out of the bosom
Was never given in vain
Tis paid with sighs a-plenty
And sold for endless rue
Now we are twenty-five
Thank god that its not true
Enough of poetry.
It merely proves that truth and beauty differ; but notwithstanding this I hope that you will find that our truth will do.
Thank god I know
that William Blake is wrong
And I can come home to you
in all my visibility
